Dental Crown
Chicago, IL

Out of our many services at East Village Dental Centre dental crowns are one of the more common procedures done whether it is for reconstructive or cosmetic reasons. Crowns in general are a great tooth restoration option that allows you to keep your natural tooth, which at the end of the day, is the best possible option for your mouth. Here is what you need to know about dental crowns and how they can help you restore a smile and/or chewing and speaking functionality.

About Dental Crowns

A dental crown will cover the actual crown of the tooth, which is what you can see with the naked eye. It acts as a protector for a tooth that otherwise would have its functionality compromised. There are various materials that a crown can be made from and they all have their places depending on what the patient’s needs are. Some of the more popular crowns are as follows.

Composite Resin Crowns

For teeth that are located in the front or near the front, a composite resin crown is a popular choice. A resin crown can be shaded to look similar to surrounding teeth and this combined with their affordability is ultimately the reason why they are the most requested material overall. You can expect up to 10 years of usage with these crowns if they are well cared for, but they are more prone to chipping and cracks than the following materials.

Metal Crowns

A metal crown is oftentimes used for back teeth due to aesthetics, but they are exceptionally durable and can potentially last you a lifetime since they are highly resilient to chewing and grinding forces. If you are wanting a crown that you won’t have to worry about for quite a long time, this is a great option.

Porcelain Fused To Metal Crowns

Porcelain is a material that is used for the teeth that go on dental implants. This is an incredibly hard material and the metal lining inside the crown provides additional durability. Porcelain has a translucent quality to it, making it appear shockingly accurate to natural teeth - it is also resistant to staining. This crown can be with you for up to 18 years or more.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns are more costly than resin crowns and are considered on the higher end- however, they are less likely to be damaged due to the nature of the materials used. As always, it is important to take care of your crown as you would your natural teeth.

All Porcelain and All Ceramic

All-ceramic and porcelain crowns are similar in appearance to porcelain fused to metal crowns, but they don’t have any metal lining making them less durable. They are more brittle, but still durable enough for day to day life nonetheless. Porcelain is a stronger material compared to ceramic but also more expensive. However, they are both less expensive than porcelain fused to metal crowns, making them a great in-between option from resin and porcelain fused to metal crowns.
