For full and partial mouth restoration when a loss of teeth as occurred, dentures are a popular option for regaining a smile, and at East Village Dental Centre we work with many patients who choose dentures for a new set of teeth. Over 20 million Americans use dentures, making them quite common.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are false teeth that fit over the gums as support. They function how you would expect teeth to function - you can use them to chew and speak during the day how you normally would and they can be made out of different materials giving them a wide spectrum of pricing of anywhere between $300 to $3000.

There are different types of dentures, you can either receive dentures to replace several teeth or a whole mouth. For the former, partial dentures are used while the latter will use complete dentures.

Complete Dentures

When someone is thinking of dentures, complete dentures are what typically come to mind. Complete dentures give you all of the false teeth necessary for a full mouth’s worth of teeth and they are generally used for older adults who have lost their teeth due to tooth decay and/or gum disease.

As previously stated, dentures can be made using different materials. Lower end dentures will use plastic, but we recommend a resin-based denture, or ideally, porcelain since you’ll be using your teeth every day and both durability and quality will make a large difference in how you perceive your new teeth.

Dentures are created using an impression of your mouth so you can assure they will fit comfortably. Always let us know if you are experiencing fitment issues and we will be happy to make any additional adjustments.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are similar to complete dentures, but instead, they are used to replace several teeth rather than all of them. There are 3 types of partial dentures and each one has some differences from the other.

Metal

Metal partial dentures have a base alloy made of chrome and cobalt. These dentures are fitted over the gums with additional support by fixing to your natural teeth via metal clasps.

Flexible

Flexible dentures use flexible plastic and blend with the appearance of your mouth the most because the entire piece is colored to match your gums. This makes them an excellent choice for aesthetic purposes

Acrylic

Made from resin, acrylic dentures are similar to metal partial dentures, but they do not contain metal as support. These dentures also clasp to surrounding teeth.

Caring for Dentures

Dentures are removed every night for cleaning. You can use a cleaning solution that is specifically designed for dentures where they are soaked in said solution and brushed using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

There are certain foods that do not work well with dentures and can damage them over time. Excessively hard foods and foods that require a lot of chewing can put wear on your dentures faster than you’d like. There is some adjustment when moving to dentures, but we are here for you at East Village Dental Centre.
