Dental Exam
Chicago, IL

When was the last time you had a dental exam? Here at East Village Dental Centre, we love to see our patients twice a year! You might think that your teeth are in great condition, but seeing a dentist every six months can ensure that there are no underlying health conditions that go unnoticed. You do not want to wait until you experience pain or notice that something is wrong with your teeth to make a dental appointment. Be proactive when it comes to the health of your mouth.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam

A typical routine exam might last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The length of your appointment will depend on if you just need a cleaning or x-rays done as well. Also, be prepared to let us know of any known health issues or medications that you may be taking. During your exam you will see one of our dental hygienists, who will clean your mouth from front to back. The hygienist will initiate the exam and check the overall health of your mouth; as well as clean your teeth, and remove any plaque or tartar build up.

The dentist will then come in to review any findings found by the hygienist, and discuss the results of your visit. Some things that we will always check for are cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay. Depending on when your last visit was, we may take x-rays as well. Dental x-rays will provide us with a deeper view of your teeth anatomy; their location, size, and any other possible issues that may not be visible just by examining your teeth.

The Benefits of Regular Dental Exams

Not only can regular visits keep your teeth healthy, but they are also beneficial to your overall health. Some diseases actually show up in your mouth first, and if you see us regularly, then we can detect these diseases early on and recommend a course of action before your symptoms worsen. Some of these diseases include diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, and various types of cancer. Regular exams can also help catch early signs of oral cancer, and prevent life threatening infections from going untreated.

Waiting too long between visits leaves room for plaque, bacteria, and possible gum disease to take over your mouth. A problem caught early on can save you time and money in dental repairs. When teeth are left untreated, the result is often a root canal, dental implant, or other various procedures that could have been prevented. One of the best parts about having a dental exam, is that clean feeling that your teeth and mouth have afterwards.

Communication Is Key for a Dental Exam

Going to the dentist is intimidating for some people. Voice your concerns with us, we are here to help. If you are nervous, or something hurts during the exam, let us know. Especially if you have been skipping out on your biannual dental exams—cleaning your teeth, removing plaque, and flossing may cause slight discomfort during the exam. It is also important to be honest about your overall health, smoking and drinking habits, and even eating habits. As all of these things can affect the health of your teeth, gums, and tongue.
